The Netherlands Longitudinal Study on Hearing (NL-SH) was created in 2006, to examine the relationship between hearing impairment and various aspects of life, including work, psychosocial health, quality of life, and health care usage. Aims have been expanded to include the measures that mediate or moderate these relationships.

Since its start, the NL-SH has recruited over 3000 adults with- and without hearing impairment and inclusion still continues. Participants complete a questionnaire and a digits-in-noise test. These measurements are repeated every five years. Details of the study design can be found in the profile paper.

NL-SH data is available for collaborative research with other not-for-profit institutes. Those interested can contact Prof. Sophia Kramer (through info@hooronderzoek.nl) to obtain additional information about the NL-SH, discuss collaborative opportunities and request a project proposal form. Project proposals will be reviewed by the study team. If approved, applicants will be contacted by a member of the study team to sign a collaborative agreement and to discuss safe data transfer.

The NL-SH is conducted by an interdepartmental research group with researchers from the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (section Ear & Hearing), Public and Occupational Health, and Epidemiology and Data Science departments at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The NL-SH study protocol has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee (METC), of the Amsterdam Medical Center, location VUmc in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
